The tradition of Maltese Fireworks goes back to the days of the Knights of Saint John in the 16th century. It continued during British rule and became more sophisticated and intricate through the influence of Italian pyrotechnical experts at the turn of the 20th century.

To kick off the festive season, the Malta Tourism Authority organises the Malta Fireworks Festival. It is an event that celebrates the splendour of this ancient art form. And what better venue is there for this event than Malta’s unique Grand Harbour with its five natural inlets surrounded by the fortifications and bastions built by the knights of St. John. For thousands of years, this harbour was at the centre of countless wars and invasions.

At the Fireworks Festival it becomes a port of core opening its arms to visitors from all over the world. During the second world war, planes battled out in the skies over the harbour to the ugly sound track of machinegun fire and whistling bombs. At the Fireworks Festival, the bangs you will hear are formations of life and community.

Malta's Fifth Fireworks Festival is going to be held in the evenings of 29th and 30th April 2006. During the festival, a number of Maltese fireworks factories presented a series of the best mechanical ground fireworks, which are uniquely Maltese. Furthermore, apart from the local participation, three overseas participants will provide their show during these days.

The three distinct Maltese fireworks factories are giving an average of 10-minute display of Maltese aerial fireworks. The 15th August Fireworks Factory of Mosta, the St. Mary Fireworks Factory of Mqabba and the St. Michael’s Fireworks Factory of Lija,  will be demonstrating their ability in the craft of the unique Maltese fireworks displays under the control of the world’s most advanced firing system technology – FireOne.
